If you own a pet it is a certainty you will have to visit the vets throughout its life no matter how healthy your pet is. Here are a few points which hopefully help you use your vet for all aspects of it's health care, not just when it's ill!!
Know your practice
It is always a good idea to register with a practice before any of your pets become ill. Due to their nature emergencies happen at the least convenient times and it is not ideal to be searching through the Yellow pages at 3 o'clock in the morning when your pet needs Veterinary attention immediately.
When you have selected the Veterinary centre you wish to use go in. Find out about their opening times and out of hours procedure. Do their opening hours fit in with your schedule. Although all surgeries are obliged to provide a 24 hr service, will it be your Vet who is always on duty or do they share out of hours with other Veterinary practices. Again distances in an emergency can be vital.
Find out what services they offer. Most practices are now much more than somewhere to go just when your pet is ill. At Spring Lodge we have Pet Health Counsellors who can offer weight management plans designed individually for your pet. We hold puppy parties for a fun way to meet other pet owners and provide an ideal opportunity to socialise your pet. We have nurse clinics which work in the same vein as you GP's do these provide services that range from post operative check ups to claw clipping.

Veterinary practice should be the first port of call for most types of pet care advice. Speaking to our Veterinary receptionists is the best way to get advice on all aspects of pet health care.
Hopefully you won't need to visit the vet too regularly but don't automatically assume that if you do it will be for something unpleasant.
